The Heyward parents placed much emphasis on Christian worship, love for God, love for family and love for one's fellow man, traits that Janie embraced throughout her life. She became a member of Heaven's Gate United Methodist Church at a young age and worked diligently in her church. Janie was blessed to have a mother who emphasized educational achievement for all her children.
Janie was educated in the public schools of Georgetown County, graduating from Howard High School in 1948. Janie attended Claflin College (now Claflin University) where she received a Bachelor of Science Degree. She later obtained a Master of Education Degree from South Carolina State College (now South Carolina State University) and did post graduate studies at the University of South Carolina.
Janie relocated to Berkeley County in 1952 and began her teaching career which lasted 35 years. She taught Biology, as well as Mathematics, and became a member of various professional organizations. Janie loved teaching. She was, at times, stern with her students, but she loved them. Her lively, vibrant, honest and caring spirit made her a great educator and inspiration to her students.
In 1955, Janie was united in Holy Matrimony to Mr. Walter Hill, Jr. This union was blessed with two daughters. When the children reached adulthood, Janie and Walter had a chance to do some traveling. They often reminisced about these trips and expressed gratitude that God had preserved their health and provided these opportunities.
Janie's hobbies included: working in her yard, reading her Bible, traveling and singing. She loved singing so much, she could get a group of family members or friends together to sing at a moment's notice. Family members in Murrells Inlet have fond memories of Janie taking her nephews and nieces into the yard and forming what some called the "Heyward Chorale".
Upon relocating to the area, Janie joined Zion United Methodist Church (now New Light United Methodist) and served in the following capacities: Youth Advisor, Chairperson of the Council on Ministries, Trustee, Pastor-Parish Relations Committee, Church School Superintendent, United Methodist Women, Senior Choir and the Ensemble. She also served as a Lay Speaker. Janie loved working in the church. As Janie grew in God's grace, it increased her desire to visit the sick, minister to the un-churched, and serve in whatever capacity God placed upon her heart and she saw the need.
Janie was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Alpha Pi Chi Sorority and the Order of the Eastern Star, St. Stephen Chapter No. 158. She was a member of the National Educators Association and the NAACP.
Those left to cherish her precious memories are: her husband, Mr. Walter Hill, Jr. of St. Stephen, SC; two daughters, Ms. Alfreda T. Hill of Moncks Corner, SC and Mrs. Francine H. (Ernest) Williams of West Columbia, SC; two grandchildren, Mr. Patrick (Georgia) Williams and Ms. Tameaka A. Williams both of West Columbia, SC; five great-grandchildren, Patrick Jr., Ashton, Trevon, Madison and Patriss; a loving nephew, Dr. Eugene H.P. (Portia) Wade of Burlington, NC; five sisters-in-law whom she loved dearly, Mrs. Colleen A. Heyward, Mrs. Evelyn Hill, Mrs. Sally M. Counts, Mrs. Ernestine H. Harris and Mrs. Naomi H.
