Born March 10, 1911, in Lisbon, she was the daughter of Clinton and Hazel Johnston Johnston. Clarice graduated from Cornell College in Mount Vernon, where she played women's hockey and basketball. She taught in rural Lisbon country schools for two years before moving to Niagara Falls, New York. A home economist, Clarice worked in the test kitchen and demonstration department at the Niagara Mohawk Company, retiring in 1975. In 1992, she moved to Cedar Rapids from Aptos, California.
