Dorman Lester "D.L." Hawkins, Sr., 89, went to his heavenly home on Monday, February 1, 2016, at 11:50 p.m. surrounded by his loving family. He was born November 21, 1926, in Walnut, Miss., to Dorman Chester and Gladys Smith Hawkins. He graduated from Walnut High School. He enlisted into the Navy just before Pearl Harbor. He served four years during World War II. He worked for Hipwell Sheet Metal of Dallas, Texas, and Clayton Electric in Marks, Miss., until retirement. He married Gertrude Viola Buice on May 10, 1951. He was a Southern Baptist by faith. He enjoyed playing basketball, football, and baseball. He also loved to watch Western movies and read books. He duck hunted and went frog gigging.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, February 5, at the McNeece-Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Mantachie with Bro. Greg Hood officiating. Burial will be in the Stephens Cemetery with military honors.

Survivors include three children, Dorman Hawkins, Jr. (Margaret), Marsha Selby, and Rickey Hawkins (Chris); three brothers, Wayne Hawkins (Wendy) of Clarksdale, Billy Hawkins (Jane) of Southaven, and Bobby Hawkins of Santa Fe, Texas; seven grandchildren, James Hawkins, Dorman Hawkins III (Heather), Tiffany Floyd (Michael), Amy Galazra (Joey), Kelly Porter (Tansil), Jesse Hawkins and Hunter Hawkins; 17 great-grandchildren, Jonathan Hawkins, Morgan Bowden, Joey Galazra, , Skye Hawkins, Gracie Galazra, Kaitlyn Warren, Mason Galazra, Maddison Porter, Brooklyn Porter, Christain Hawkins, Landon Guthrie, Easton Hawkins, Tansil Porter, Nikki Porter, Gabe Sandova, Natalie Sandova, and Cecile Sandova.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gertrude; two sisters, Mildred Sorrells and Louise Fuller; and one grandson, Stephen L. Guthrie.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons James Hawkins, Dorman Hawkins III, Jesse Hawkins, Hunter Hawkins, Joey Galazra, and Tansil Porter, and his nephew Ken Hawkins.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until service time Friday at the McNeece-Morris Funeral Home in Mantachie.
