Suspect in shooting known as the Paseo Massacre;
Kansas City MO Police Officers Charles Perrine, Sandy Washington, Charles Neaves, and Sgt William Wells were dispatched to 1334 Paseo on a disturbance call.
When the officers arrived they found a drinking party in progress. When they informed the men that they was in violation and would have to accompany them to police headquarters, one of the men, George Bell, objected to the arrest and while looking for his coat suddenly produced a shotgun which he used to kill Officer Neaves. Police Officers Charles Perrine, Sandy Washington, and Sgt Wells were shot and killed by George's brother, William Bell. The officers were able to return fire and killed William Bell.
On December 8, 1948, George Bell, charged with slaying Officer Neaves was given the death penalty by a Circuit Court Jury.
George Bell was not executed until December 2, 1949 at 12:01 a.m. George Bell became the 25th person to be executed by the State of Missouri.
