CHARLES OTIS NEWELL, 85 died peacefully on March 15, 2012, at his home in Orlando, FL. He was born May 19, 1926 in Cleveland, where the Otis clan settled in the early 19th century after migrating from Connecticut. The family played a prominent role in the growth of the city. His great grandfather, Charles A. Otis, was the Mayor of Cleveland in 1872 after successfully founding the Otis Steel Company, Which became one of the largest employers of the area. After serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II , Mr. Newell attended Kenyon College in Gambier. For most of his business career, he was a general partner of the Cleveland investment firm, Prescott, Ball & Turben, which occupied two floors in the World Trade Center, New York. He was active in Midland, TX, where he helped in the financing and sale of several oil companies. For him, the oil patch was much fun due to the exceptional entrepreneurial spirit, and quality of the Midland community. However, his principle passion was his family. In 1983, he married an Orlando native Judith Ellis Foster, and moved to Orlando, FL. It was the beginning of a new and wonderful life with his Judy. He continued his work with Prescott, Ball & Turben, until his retirement in 1990. Afterwards, golf became his challenge, and his friendship and laughter on the links was well known. He was a member of The Country Club of Orlando, The Tavern Club of Cleveland, and The Chagrin Valley Hunt Club in Gates Mills. He is survived by his wife; three children: Charles Otis Newell Jr. of Austin, TX, Marci Newell Wiersema of Laramie, WY, David B. Newell of Chargrin Falls; two stepchildren: Murphy James Foster III of Baton Rouge, LA and Judith Ramelle Foster of Zachary, LA and seven grandchildren. Also his brother survives him, John Newell III of Scottsdale, AZ.
