Emma Jean was born on Aug. 8, 1928 in Madison, Kan., the daughter of Arlington (Arlie) Barb and Stella Brown-Barb. She attended Eureka High School and Butler Community College. She worked her entire life in a variety of occupations before settling on a career in real estate working for Eugene D. Brown in Kansas City, and was a broker and co-founder of Hughes Company Realty in Mound City, Kan She was a member of the First Christian Church. Emma Jean was known for her love of family and friends.
Upon marriage, Emma Jean lived on a farm in Greenwood County Kansas for 15 years. Throughout their 67 years together Calvin and Emma Jean lived in Eureka, El Dorado, Olathe, Mound City, Kansas; Joplin, Mo., and Bella Vista, Ark.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 67 years Calvin L. Hughes; two brothers, Clell and Floyd; and a sister, Alice.
