Ed grew up during the Depression Era and was a caddy at the local golf course. It was during this time where he developed his well-known {at least to his family} competiveness. Ed graduated in 1943 from Peru Public Schools.
He enlisted in the Merchant Marines serving in the Pacific, Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Caribbean Seas. He later married Sally (Smith) on August 29, 1953 in Decatur, Indiana and she survives. They moved to Lafayette in 1959. He was employed by Indiana-Michigan Electric Power Company then worked for Anheuser Busch and retired from Public Service Indiana.
He enjoyed camping with his family. He and Sally enjoyed traveling and visited most of the 50 states. They also spent several winters in South Padre Island, Texas. After retirement, he enjoyed playing golf with his sons and grandsons. Then, he also competed in Senior Olympics earning several medals. He enjoyed sports and was a Cubs, Purdue, and Colts fan, and enjoyed watching professional golf. He enjoyed reading and history.
He was a member of the American Legion, Eagles Lodge, and was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. Ed is survived by five children: Steve (wife: Karen), Randy (wife:Kris), Rebecca (Robin) Kerr, Phillip (wife: Daniele), and Kathy Kerssemakers. Also surviving are ten grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and many nephews and nieces. He has one brother, Dick, in Peru, Indiana surviving. He was preceded by two brothers and two sisters.
