He was a Regimental Serjeant Major in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, 19th Battalion. Service No. 23979. He retired from the regiment and became Hotel Keeper of The Red House Hotel, Dee Banks, Chester. Later he became owner of the Cross Foxes Hotel, Steam Mill Street, Boughton, Chester. He died aged 51 yrs in the Royal Infirmary after being admitted for a fistula. He was buried on the 22nd March 1916.
