Martin Howard Sullivan, 94, of Port St. John, Florida, passed away Wednesday, January 27th. Martin was born November 23, 1921 in Granby, NY to William and Bessie(Law) Sullivan. He went to Cooperstown High School and upon graduating in 1941, planned to enter the ministry. Instead, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and, when war broke out, he along with his brothers, William, Arthur, Wesley and sister, Elizabeth served their country, each in a different branch of the military. Martin received three medals for his service: the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the WWII Victory Medal. It was while serving in the Army Air Corps in Scotland that he met his first wife, Vera Caddow. They were married on September 11th, 1945.
At the end of the war,he returned to New York with his wife and they lived at various times in Oneonta, Herkimer, and Mohawk. He went to Hartwick College and Oneonta State Teachers' College and afterwards, began a long career in teaching. Later he received graduate degrees from Syracuse University and Florida Atlantic University. In 1964, the family moved to Fort Lauderdale Florida where he continued teaching.
Vera died in 1988 after a lengthy illness. On November 9, 1991, Martin married Brigitte Marachi. They moved to Port St. John and have shared a long, happy life together. He was predeceased by all of his siblings, including a sister, Anna, who died when she was 7. A son, James, died in 1985. He is survived by his wife, three daughters, two sons in law, a son and daughter in law, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren.
A memorial celebration will be held in the early summer at the Methodist Church in Port St. John followed by burial at Quantico National Cemetery in Virginia.
