Josephine Clara Schilmoeller was the six child, and fifth daughter, of Johann Heinrich "John Henry" Schilmoeller, originally of Visbeck, Germany, and Elizabeth Stavermann, of Cinn., Ohio. She was born October 13, 1891 in Rushes, Kenton, Kentucky.

She grew up with her nine siblings on the Schilmoeller Dairy Farm on Kyles Lane. The photo above was a family photo, taken at the farm in about 1911, when she was approximately 20 years of age.

The Schilmoeller family were active members of the Catholic faith. As with the rest of the Schilmoeller children, Josephine was baptized, received First Holy Communion, and was confirmed at St. John's Church in Covington.

On August 8, 1913 Josephine, then 22, entered St. Walburg Convent, receiving her Holy Habit the following year. After five years in devoted service, she made her solemn (or perpetual) vows at age 27. At Villa Madonna Covenant on April 1, 1918, she vowed to live a life of stability, conversion, and obedience, in the Benedictine tradition. She was thereafter known as "Sister Mary Anna Justina, O.S.B".

Sr. Mary Justina served her community by teaching, and for many years did so under the leadership of Mother Prioress Walburga Saelinger. In addition to serving the community of Covington, during her career, Sr. Mary Justina taught at St. Paul's in Florence, KY and St. James in Brookville, KY.

She died on August 23, 1947 in Covington, Kenton, Kentucky, at the age of 55. All of her earthly wealth was willed to the St. Walburg Convent.
