Robert “Roy” Taylor was the only son of John Thomas Taylor and Sarah Jane Taylor (nee Henderson) of Sheriff Street, West Hartlepool. His father worked in publishing as a compositor. Upon matriculation Roy became a student teacher. He enlisted with the 2nd Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry on 31 May 1916 shortly after his 18th birthday. He served with the Durham Light Infantry on the Western Front making his final voyage from Dover to France on 16th March 1917. He was killed a few weeks later on the first day of the Battle of Arras 9th April 1917.
