Royalty. Queen of Spain. Born the eldest child of Joao V and Maria Anna of Austria. She was considered as the possible heir to the Portuguese throne until her brother Pedro was born. She received an excellent education and was very musical. From the age of nine on the composer Domenico Scarlatti gave her cembalo lessons. Scarlatti later followed her to Madrid where he wrote hundreds of sonatas for her. At the age of 18 she married Fernando of Spain in Badajoz. Her husband, who was very musical too, felt great affection for her. Barbara suffered all her life from asthma and died two years after becoming queen. She was buried at the church of the Convent Salesas Reales, which she had founded and dedicated to her patron Saint Barbara. After her death Fernando retired to Villaviciosa de Odón where he became melancholic and visibly unkempt. He died there a year after her and was buried in the same church. Their monuments were built back to back and are only separated by a wall.
