Mitchell Palmer Bond, 86, of Royston, Georgia died quietly at home on September 13, 2006 surrounded by his family after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson Disease.
Mitchell was born April 20, 1920 in Madison County, Georgia. His family moved to Royston in 1928. He attended Bond Academy and graduated from Royston High School in 1935. He graduated from Young Harris College and also graduated in 1939 from the University of Georgia, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree and was a member of Phi Kappa Phi. After graduation, he lived in Clayton, Georgia and served as the Union County Extension Agent before serving the United States Army where he was stationed in the China-Burma-India Theater during World War II.
Mitchell married Susie Cunningham in 1950. They were married 45 years until her death in 1995. Mitchell was a resident of Royston for 78 years. He was dedicated to his family, church and community. He faithfully served the Royston First United Methodist Church as Chairman of the Education Committee, Chairman of the Finance Committee, a charter member of the United Methodist Men and Chairman of the Administrative Council. He was a member of the Building Committee for the Education wing. In 1968 he took the job of Treasurer for the church. He diligently served for 16 years in this capacity. Mitchell was also a teacher of the Crusaders Sunday School class. Mitchell was a community leader of Royston. He served as President of the Chamber of Commerce, the Lionís Club, the P.T.A., the Shriners, Trustee of the Royston School and he served on the City Council and was Mayor of Royston. During his career in the poultry business, he founded Mitchell P. Bond Hatchery. He served as member, Director and President of the advisory board for the north Georgia Poultry Federation, Vice-Chairman of the Georgia Poultry Improvement Association and served on the World Poultry Congress.
Mitchell is survived by his two daughters, Palma Bond Stewart of Wilmington, Delaware, and Marjorie Bond Moore and her husband, Richard Moore of Royston, Georgia; five grandchildren, Lauren and Hayden Stewart, and Lindsey, Quen, and Larsen Moore. Additionally he is survived by his sister Jessie Mary and her husband Othniel McGehee of Macon, Jessís son, Steve Balkcom and his wife Nancy and their two daughters, Ginny and Sarah and grandson, Chris Holcomb. Mr. Bond was preceded in death by one sister, Malinda Eleanor Bond.
Funeral services for Mr. Bond will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 16, 2006, at the Royston First United Methodist Church with Rev. Jim McCollough and Rev. Bobby Anthony officiating. Burial will follow in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Royston.
The family will receive friends and family from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Friday, September, 15, 2006 at the Pruitt Funeral Home. The family is at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Moore, 586 Diamond Lane, Royston, Georgia. Flowers are optional.
