Born March 20, 1946, in Sac City, Iowa, Daniel Bernard Engler was the oldest of nine children born to Bernard William and Evelyn Marguerite (Murphy) Engler. He was raised on a Century Farm south of Fonda, Iowa, and graduated from Our Lady of Good Council High School in 1964. Dan earned his bachelor’s degree at South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota, then served as First Lieutenant in the United States Army during the Viet Nam era.

Following his military service, Dan returned to Iowa and was employed at Clarke County State Bank in Osceola. During this time, he met and, on November 29, 1974, married Marcia Ann Spittler in Clinton, Iowa. Dan worked in the banking industry in several Iowa communities including Ainsworth, Washington, Sibley, and Holstein. In 1987, he settled in Nevada where he worked for Nevada National Bank until striking out on his own in 1996 to establish Community Bank in Nevada. Dan was a well-respected visionary with strong leadership skills and high expectations who surrounded himself with quality people to provide service to the area. He also had a passion for agriculture, especially the Hampshire and Yorkshire pigs he raised and which took him on travels across the country.

Dan will be remembered as a soft-spoken, humble, and hard-working man who was an excellent role model. He found great joy in his family, especially his grandchildren, and also supported children of the community through his participation in 4-H and FFA. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Rotary Club of Nevada, VFW, and the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Marcia; five children, Ben (Candi) Engler and their children Annabelle and Samuel of Cambridge, Jessica (Scott) McKinley and their children Amazing Grace and Sweet Caroline of Blue Springs, MO, KC (Mark) Nowak and their children Ella Rose, Andrew Theodore, and Nicholas Daniel of Houston, TX, Liz (Dave) Beagley and their children Evelyn Joy and Lydia Claire of Ames, and Rebecca Engler (Brett Stanford) of Decatur, IL. He is also survived by two brothers, Tom (Deborah) Engler of Horseshoe Bay, TX, and Timothy Engler of Gordonville, TX; five sisters, Rebecca Webb of Norwalk, Pamela (John) Strathman of Des Moines, Rita (Bob) Leitzinger of Norwalk, Carolyn (Doug) Gordon of Norwalk, and Julie (Earl) Kilgore of Cumming; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, George Engler.
