He was born 31 August, 1946 to Jim E. May, Sr. and Maxine Rowell and grew up in Pensacola. After his schooling, he enlisted in the Army and served from 1963 - 1969. Johnny was a SSG in the 1st Cavalry during the Vietnam War. He served as a Forward Artillery Observer. He received two Bronze Stars, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry and the Gallantry Cross with Bronze Stars. After the war, he finished a certification in Paint and Body at Pensacola Junior College.
He then went on to be an over-the-road truck driver for the next 30 years. During those years, he loved to fish and have family fish frys.
Johnny was a member of the local Al Gray Chapter 23 of the (DAV) Disabled American Veterans.
He is preceded in death by both his parents; step-mom, Flora Whitehead; younger brother, Kenny May.
He is survived by his daughter, Christina May Brooks; granddaughter, Cheyenne Davila; 2 grandsons, Jasyn and John Vice; 1 great-granddaughter (due in July, 2016); older brother, Jim E. May, Jr.; and younger sister, Lydia Edminston.
A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, January 29, 2016 with military honors at Holy Cross Cemetery at 3:00 p.m. Trahan Family Funeral Home of Pensacola is in charge of arrangements.
