Johnny was born in Raleigh on October 11, 1925 to the late Oscar and Annie Hawkins. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, sisters, and many other relatives and friends.
Johnny attended elementary, high school and college in Raleigh. He graduated from Shaw University. His love for education led him to teach and work with students in many cities. He retired from the Chicago Public School System in 1986.
Johnny will be remembered as a loving brother, uncle, relative, and friend. He is survived by his brother, Dr. James Hawkins (Angie) of Memphis, Tennessee; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and a special friend, James Wilder of Chicago, Illinois.
Viewing from 2:00 - 8:00 pm on Monday, October 19, 2015 at Haywood Funeral Home. Homegoing service 10:00 am Tuesday October 20, 2015 at the C.A. Haywood, Sr. Memorial Chapel preceded by a 9:30 am visitation. Interment follows the service at Raleigh National Cemetery, 501 Rock Quarry Road, Raleigh, North Carolina.
