Wilbert Lester Long, 91, of 350 N. Willow St., Harrisonburg, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2016. He had resided at Oak Lea Nursing Home for the last three years and nine months. Wilbert was born Feb. 25, 1924, in Harrisonburg, Va., and was a son of the late Stuart and Nellie Cave Long.

He spent his life in Harrisonburg. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from February 1943 until December 1945, being honorably discharged after being wounded. He was a recipient of a Purple Heart. After returning home, he worked as a truck driver and then for Klingstein Realty for many years.

He was a member of Harrisonburg First Church of the Brethren.

On Oct. 24, 1946, he married Ruth E. Long, who preceded him in death on July 22, 2013. He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Billy Dennett in December of 2014; son-in-law, William Dennett in March of 2014; two brothers, Emery Long and Gilbert Long; and three sisters, Marie Minnick, La Rue Chapman and Grace McDonaldson.

He is survived by daughter, Gloria Dennett of Harrisonburg, Va., and a brother, Albert Long of Broadway, Va. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, 2016, at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg with the Rev. Clarence Moyers officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. before the service at the funeral home.
