Bernie was born on March 21, 1938 in Lastrup, MN to the late Frank and Josephine (Block) Merkling. She grew up in Pierz, MN where she attended school at the Pierz Catholic School. She was united in marriage to George Kroll on February 6, 1956 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Pierz, MN. The couple moved to Babbitt, MN in 1956, later relocating to Embarrass, MN where they farmed for several years. In 1978 they moved to Sobieski, MN and later settled in Pierz, MN. Bernie and George often spent the winters in Texas and Arizona. She was a woman who loved all aspects of the great-outdoors. Bernie enjoyed fishing, snowmobiling, feeding her hummingbirds, and tending to her vegetable and flower gardens. When she not outside, she could be found making crafts, playing cards, or cooking and baking. She was a very social person, who had many friends that she loved to visit with and enjoy a nice cup of tea. Her family was most important to her and she always loved when they were together. Bernie was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.
Bernie is survived [by] children, Patti Kroll of Townsend, MT, Peggy (Ted) Beckman of Columbia Heights, MN, Scott (Kyong) Kroll of Garrison, MN, and Billi Jo (Bill) Hawley of Friendship, MD; daughter-in-law, Jeanette Raab-Kroll of Rice, MN; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Cyril (Nancy) Merkling of Stewart, TN; and sisters, Helen Ross of Pierz, MN, Linda (David) Crotty of Salt Lake City, UT and Josie Mayer of Cam Verde, AZ.
Bernie was preceded in death by parents, Frank and Josephine Merkling; husband, George Kroll; son, Jeffery Kroll; and sister, Arlene Muncy.
