Son of George and Susanna (Jordan) Jordan of Ferox Hall, Tonbridge

He was educated at Eton and Queens' College, Cambridge and was Secretary of the Royal Society - his fields were Chemistry, Mineralogy and Zoology about which subjects he authored several books and academic papers

John married Hester Anna Holwell 24 Jun 1798 in Harrow, London - they had one daughter, Anna - Hester died in 1800

After Hester's death, John travelled and studied mechanics and mineralogy, in 1807 being elected F.R.S (his full biography appears in the Dictionary of National Biography Vol 04 page 249-250)

John married Caroline Wise, the daughter of George Furlong Wise of Woolston, Devon in 1809 - she died 19 Aug 1810

John afterward married the widow Mrs Elizabeth "Eliza" Towers 31 May 1819 in Middlesex

His Will: of the British Museum Great Russell Street to Elizabeth, his wife all of his household furnishings etal except for the following which he bequeathed to his daughter, Anna Atkins; "my chair made of wood of the tree purchased by me on the field of Waterloo called the Waterloo Tree, the picture of my late father George Children Esquire and the Silver Candlesticks all which belonged to my father, also Robertsons Histories, Sheworths (?) Sermons and all my books in which the name of my said father is written with this own hand; the remainder to my wife Elizabeth and my son-in-law John Pelly Atkins"
