"Some History of the Jesse Brown House at the North East, North Haven. Most of this information was given to me [Samuel Hiram Beverage] by my Aunt Florence (Beverage) Brown (Mrs Jesse Brown) who lived in this house from 1910 to mid 1940's.
The construction was begun in 1831, and was the joint venture of brothers John & Oliver Brown, sons of John Brown 1762 - 1817 and wife Lydia (Carr) Brown, 1774 - 1841.
The reason the new house was to be a two-family house is that both John and Oliver were seafaring men and they thought it would be good to have their families as company for each other while they were away at sea. As you imagine, it did not work out very well, especially after the untimely death of Captain Oliver Brown at Savannah, Ga on Sept 8, 1838. He left a widow and one child, a daughter, who inherited her father's share of the property and married James Webster. This is why the Waldo Co map of 1859 shows the owners as being J Brown & J Webster. Eventually, John bought out Oliver's heir. The farm was divided, the northern part going to the Websters. That part is now (1987) of Charles "Jack" Bauer."
