Ruth was one of twin daughters born to the marriage of railroad billing clerk, Lyman Benton Cleghorn and his second wife, Margaret B. Henderson Mills Cleghorn. Her twin sister was Mary E. Cleghorn-Mitchell. Her parents divorced after her birth and her mother remarried to railroad brakeman, Samuel Mitchell, who adopted the twins. Her first husband was David R. Adams. Their union was blessed with a son, John Quincy. In 1940 she was separated from her first husband, living with her mother, son, sister, and grandmother. She worked in a yarn shop as a knitting instructor, earning $800 a year. She divorced March 1967. She married second Emil M. Krauk. They divorced January 1975. She married third Everett E.
