Ulysses E. Dodge, of Fredonia, died suddenly from a paralytic stroke. January 5, 1909, aged 87 years, was one of the oldest and best known residents of the county. He was the first man to plant grapes as a commercial business in the Chautauqua belt; and was a successful gardener and fruit grower. He was the first Grande ever organized, Fredonia Grange, No. 1, Which held it first meeting April 16, 1888. Nearly a hundred members of Fredonia Grange attended the funeral.
