Obituary for Jimmie Lee Pearce Powell
Jimmie Lee Pearce Powell died on Sunday, 1/24/2016. The oldest of five siblings, she was born in the home of her maternal grandmother in Copeville, Texas, on 6/6/1927, to James Zebulon Pearce and Lillian Graves Pearce.
She grew up in Wylie, Texas, where her father was superintendent of schools. Always brilliant and curious, she skipped two grades in elementary school and graduated from high school at age 16. Upon graduation, she moved to Dallas, TX, and worked before entering Decatur Baptist College, where she met James Osler “Jim” Powell in 1946, the year they were each elected “Most Popular” by their fellow students. Jimmie Lee and Jim married in 1948 and moved to Levelland, TX, where their daughters, Karen and Catherine, were born. Several relocations later, they settled in Richardson, TX, in 1964 and made their home there until Jim’s death in 1990.
Jimmie Lee possessed a keen sense of humor, sharp wit, elegant style, gorgeous legs, and no small amount of determination. She was soft-spoken, but never hesitant to make her opinion known. She had a joyous, bubbly, infectious laugh and a contagious smile. She was proud of her heritage and was the keeper of her family’s history and stories. She loved flowers, music, chocolate, the color blue, peaches, Christmas, bridge games, traveling, all types of sports, her family and friends, and above all, her God. She attended the First Baptist Church of Richardson, where she taught Sunday School and bible study classes for more than thirty years, and was a member of Town North Women’s Club, three bridge clubs, and several book clubs.
Throughout the years, Jimmie Lee’s beautiful hands touched the lives of those who knew her. We will always treasure our images of her joy in using her hands to create homes filled with beauty and laughter, to cook in abundance the meals that nourished family and friends, and to nurture those dear to her in times of both physical and emotional need. She was blessed with God’s gift of hospitality -- neither her home nor her heart ever knew a stranger.
Although she experienced serious health issues and severe pain for many years, Jimmie Lee refused to let them defeat or define her. She stayed focused on remaining independent and active, holding to her faith and never losing hope. She faced every situation with unyielding strength, a positive attitude, and an indomitable spirit and showed us how to live with grace, dignity, and joy, no matter the circumstances.
Jimmie Lee is predeceased by her parents; her brother, Joseph Graves Pearce; and her beloved Jim. She is survived by her daughters, Karen and Catherine Powell; her sister, Carroll Pearce Johnson; her brother, C. Jack Pearce; her brother and sister-in-law, Robert M. and Joy Pearce; her sister and brother-in-law, Jane Powell Blase and Joseph V. Blase; her brother-in-law, Richard L. Reed; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and her heart-daughters and grand-godchildren. Also grieving her loss is Zachary, the little black fuzzy dog that has been her companion and guardian for the past three years.
Her funeral service will be held in the Memorial Chapel of Restland Funeral Home at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, 2/6/2016, with interment at Restland Memorial Cemetery immediately following.
Jimmie Lee’s daughters wish to express their appreciation to the physicians who treated her with such skill and compassion and to the nurses, aides, and therapists, who became part of the family and lovingly assisted in her care during the last months of her life. You enabled her to remain at home, surrounded by the people and things she loved.
If you would like to make a donation in Jimmie Lee’s name, she would have been touched to know that you contributed to the building fund for the First Baptist Church of Copeville, Texas (P. O. Box 260, Copeville, TX 75121), which was established by her ancestors, or to an organization that has special meaning to you.
