Barbara Jean (Wilson) Killoren, 79, of Powhattan, died late Saturday evening, January 23, 2016, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Hiawatha.
She was born at Forest City, Missouri, May 12, 1936, one of three children born to the late Farrel and Mary VanDever Wilson. She grew up at Forest City, attended school there, later graduating high school with the class of 1954. After graduation, she worked as a switchboard operator for the phone company in Forest City. After moving to Hiawatha, she worked as a nurse aid at the Hiawatha Community Hospital.
Mrs. Killoren was a dedicated and faithful member of the United Methodist Church at Powhattan; and United Methodist Women of the Church. Through the years, she taught Sunday school, and Vacation Bible School. Barbara was busy: she was a member of the Victory Club, Comet Road Extension Unit, served as secretary of the Wenger American Legion Auxiliary Post #373 of Powhattan; and took care of the shelter house in Powhattan. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, cooking, and walking.
She met on the dance floor and later married William R. “Bill” Killoren, April 9, 1967, at the home of her parents in Forest City. They farmed near Powhattan until 1990 when he retired. He died November 22, 2001. She was also preceded in death by a step-son Gary Killoren, also his wife Helen; and a step-grandson Greg Killoren.
Survivors include two brothers: James Wilson of Savannah, Missouri, Thomas Wilson (Linda) of St. Joseph, Missouri; three step-grandchildren: Terry, Brian (Heidi), Katrina; and numerous step-great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Barbara’s life is planned for 11 a.m. Thursday, January 28, at the United Methodist Church in Powhattan, with Reverend Priscilla Davies officiating. Interment will follow at Powhattan Cemetery.
