Dennis LeRoy Marshall, age 66, passed away on Friday, January 22, 2016, at the Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was born on February 15, 1949, in Syracuse, Kansas, the son of Burgess LaVere Marshall and Minnie Lou (Beem) Marshall.

Dennis began his life in Syracuse and attended Syracuse High School and graduated in 1967. He went on to further his education and attended Cloud County Community College for two years, where he was a member of the Thunderbird men’s basketball team. He returned to Syracuse where he began working for the State of Kansas Department of Transportation in the maintenance division, and later moved to Leoti and continued working for the State. He then moved to Garden City and eventually to Manhattan, where he was a driver’s license examiner for the State of Kansas in both cities for several years in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Dennis also was a high school basketball referee and softball umpire in southwest Kansas, and enjoyed that contribution to the young athletes in the area. He moved to Concord, Calif., and lived there during the 1980s, where he worked a variety of jobs.

In November 1991, he visited his parents in Syracuse and while home, met Gale (Burns) Polk. He moved back to Syracuse in February 1992, and started working at Roy’s Jack and Jill grocery store. He eventually was hired to work again for the State of Kansas Transportation Department in the maintenance division.

On July 3, 1993, he married Gale, the love of his life, and they resided in Syracuse until they headed west to Henderson, Nevada, in 2000, and then moved to Laughlin, Nevada, in 2002. He was employed at Walmart in both Henderson and Laughlin. He retired from Walmart in 2008. He enjoyed living in the Laughlin area and resided there until his passing.

He enjoyed watching Kansas Jayhawks basketball, and cheering on the Kansas City Royals and Kansas City Chiefs. He was an avid follower of sports and liked going to the casino to play the slot machines with Gale. He always was interested in how the Syracuse High School athletic teams were doing, making calls back to coaches to inquire about the teams and their successes. He had been planning a trip back to Syracuse in the summer of 2016 to see the new SHS track, football field and gymnasium.

He is survived by his spouse, Gale (Burns) Marshall of Laughlin, NV; his mother, Minnie Lou (Beem) Marshall of Lakin, KS; a daughter, Tanda Castle; two sons, Dale Polk of Henderson, NV, and Joel Polk of Colby, KS; a brother, Brett Marshall of Garden City, KS; nine grandchildren, Spencer, Abigail, Elijah, Lucas, Kalynn and Aiden Castle, and Kansas, Cheyenne and Lilly Polk. He was especially close to his “adopted” sister, Joana Rash of Syracuse, and his cousins, Valeta Marshall of Sullivan, Mo., and Leo James of Concord, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his father, Burgess LaVere Marshall; and two sons, Terrance Marshall and Nicholas Marshall.

A graveside memorial service for Dennis LeRoy Marshall will begin at 2 p.m. MST Feb. 13 at Syracuse Cemetery. A family visitation will follow from 3 to 4 p.m. MST at the home of Jeanie and Mike Miller, 410 N. Johnson St., Syracuse.

Mr. Marshall died Jan. 22, 2016, at Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas. Cremation has taken place.

In lieu of flowers, memorials payable to the Syracuse High School Booster Club may be sent in care of Fellers Funeral Home & Monuments LLC, Box 1253, Syracuse, KS 67878.
