Bill was born to Henry Archelaus and Stella Sophia (Valentine) Atwood in 1916.

His mother remarried sometime between 1920 and 1930 to Maurice Sherman, who acted as William's step-father. Bill had a brother, Dean W., born in 1915.

Bill married Lelah Violet Husman. She remarried in 1949 to George H. Westcott. Some records have her name as Violet Lelah Husman, Violet Husman Atwood and Lelah Westcott.

Bill later married Yvonne Theresa Heron and they had a son, Stephen and a daughter, Alice.

He became a Salinas (CA) Police Officer around 1939 and appears to have stayed at that profession at least until 1941.

A Monterey newspaper obituary notice of September 20, 1996 reported that he was a retired agricultural sales manager and that he was a WWII Navy veteran.
