Aurel “AJ” Gideon Joseph Tougas was born on May 24, 1925, in Brooks, Minnesota, the son of Florian and Eugenie (Giasson) Tougas. He grew up in Brooks where he received his education. On December 30, 1943, AJ joined the United States Army. He served his country in Europe during WWII. AJ earned his honorable discharge on July 10, 1945, and returned to Minnesota.
On April 24, 1944, AJ was united in marriage to Aurora Houle at St. Josephs Catholic Church in Red Lake Falls. This union was blessed with nine children. The family made their home in Red Lake Falls, Warroad, and various other cities in Minnesota before retiring in Paynesville. He managed Farmers Union COOP in Warroad and Paynesville and then worked in sales until his retirement in 1983. Aurora died on June 10, 2011. She and AJ were able to share in 67 years of marriage before her death.
AJ was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville. He was active there as a member of the Knights of Columbus. AJ was also a member of Paynesville American Legion Post #271 and volunteered at Koronis Manor and he attended at Bethesda Daybreak in Willmar. He enjoyed fishing, traveling in his motor home, and eating. AJ was an excellent husband and diligent caregiver while Aurora was sick. He loved to spend time with his family especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
AJ is survived by his children: Dick (Kay) of New York Mills, Claudia (Dennis) Dammann of Paynesville, Michael (Joyce) of Paynesville, Laurel (John) Liestman of Paynesville, June Schumacher of Sioux Falls, SD, Carol Tougas of the Twin Cities, Daniel of New Johnsonville, TN, Sandra (Jay) Olsen of Buffalo, Todd (June) of St. Cloud; 17 grandchildren; and 23 great grandchildren. AJ is also survived by his siblings, Jerome, Philip (Chris), and Clarice Tougas; and many nieces and nephews.
AJ was preceded in death by his parents; wife; grandson, Jon; great-grandson Broc; three brothers, and three sisters.
