Funeral services for Jodie Downing Smith, 91, who died April 15th in Electra Memorial Hospital, were held Wednesday, April 17th at 2 p.m. in First Baptist Church with Rev. Wil­liam Etheredge, a former pastor and Rev. Mike Grcsham, pastor, officiating. Interment was in New Electra Cemetery under direction of Totten-Day Funeral Home.

He was born Oct. 6, 1893 in Redrock, Tx., son of the late Rev. and Mrs. S.W. Smith. He came to Electra in December of 1917 and married Willa Calvert, Sept. 23, 1921. She precceded him in death earlier this year.
He was editor of the Stockdale Times from 1913-14 and co-owner of the Electra Leader, a forerunner of the Electra Star from 1918-1919. He was an employee of the Electra News for many years and owner and operator of Smith Printing Company in Electra.

He began farming and ranching in 1931 and was actively engaged in that business for over 40 years and became involved in the oil production business in the 1940s.

He was a 50-year member of Knights of Pythias Lodge 393, a past Chancellor Commander of the lodge and a Deputy Grand Chancellor of the Texas Grand Lodge.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, a member of the building committee for the pre­sent church building, general Sunday School superintendent for six years and departmental superintendent for Intermediate and Young People's Depart­ments. He was ordained as a deacon in 1945, acting as chair­man of the Finance Committee and Historical Committee.

He is the author of the well-known western book, "His­tory of the Chisum War."

Surviving is a brother, Olen Smith of Electra._
