He was born Oct. 6, 1893 in Redrock, Tx., son of the late Rev. and Mrs. S.W. Smith. He came to Electra in December of 1917 and married Willa Calvert, Sept. 23, 1921. She precceded him in death earlier this year.
He was editor of the Stockdale Times from 1913-14 and co-owner of the Electra Leader, a forerunner of the Electra Star from 1918-1919. He was an employee of the Electra News for many years and owner and operator of Smith Printing Company in Electra.
He began farming and ranching in 1931 and was actively engaged in that business for over 40 years and became involved in the oil production business in the 1940s.
He was a 50-year member of Knights of Pythias Lodge 393, a past Chancellor Commander of the lodge and a Deputy Grand Chancellor of the Texas Grand Lodge.
He was a member of First Baptist Church, a member of the building committee for the present church building, general Sunday School superintendent for six years and departmental superintendent for Intermediate and Young People's Departments. He was ordained as a deacon in 1945, acting as chairman of the Finance Committee and Historical Committee.
He is the author of the well-known western book, "History of the Chisum War."
