Roy Hopkins, Jr., son of Roy and Bernice Oleson Hopkins, was born on October 25, 1919, on the family farm two miles north and four miles east of Laurens. He died on December 27, 1987, at Pocahontas Community Hospital, Pocahontas.

He attended country school in Cummins Township, and graduated from Laurens High School in 1937. He attended business school at A.I.B. and barber college in Des Moines. After graduation he returned to Laurens, where he began partnership with his brother Thaine.

Roy married Delphine Carroll on June 1, 1941 at the Little Brown Church at Nashua. Roy and Delphine were the parents of three children, Carol, who died in 1974, Thaine, and Holly.

Roy served 3 1/2 years in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving overseas in North Africa and Italy. When he returned home he resumed his barbering business in Laurens.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, several lodges and shrines, a past president of the Laurens Chamber of Commerce, past president of the Laurens Golf & Country Club, and member of the American Legion and V.F.W. In recognition of his years of service to the Laurens community, he was awarded the Laurens Chamber of Commerce "Outstanding Member" award in 1974. His hobbies included coin collecting, golfing, and fishing.

Survivors include his wife Delphine; a son Thaine, of Laurens; a daughter Holly (Dennis) Premo, of Olympia, Washington; grandchildren and step-grandchildren; a brother Garth, of Laurens; and sisters, Mrs. Pearle Bowlsby, of Des Moines, and Mrs. Beverly Schluter, of Bloomington, Minnesota.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Carol, and five brothers, Max, Owen, Thaine, Merrill, and Billy.
