John was a son of Jacob and Mary [Kerington/Kennington] Boyle. On 4 May 1864 he immigrated from Ireland to NY City aboard the ship Edinburg. On 3 Apr 1883 John married at Edwards Co., IL to Mary Jane Hinkle, (1860- ) a daughter of Jacob (1827-1918)and Elvira Jane (1831-1918)(Hendrick) Hinkle. John's occupation shown on census's was railroad locomotive engineer.

"Golden Anniversary
Mr. and Mrs. John Boyle, long time residents of Mattoon, observed their golden wedding anniversary at the home of their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. R. . W. Boyle, 3721 Richmond avenue, on Monday.
There was no celebration, but a number of friends called at the Boyle home to offer congratulations. The anniversary found both of them in good health, Mr. and Mrs. Boyle were married on April 3, 1883, at West Salem, with Rev. Father H. Herbst officiating. They came to Mattoon the following month, and, with the exception of a short residence at Princeton, they have been Mattoon citizens ever since. Mr. Boyle is a retired locomotive engineer. For a number of years he was in the service of the Peoria, Decatur and Evansvllle road, now part of the Illinois Central, but he spent the last years of his railroad career in the employ of the Southern railroad. Mrs. Boyle, was Mary Jane Henkle, was born Dec. 14, 1860, in West Salem, a daughter ot Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Henkle. She grew to young womanhood in that community. Mr. Boyle, a native of Ireland, was born in County Kerry on Sept, 10, 1853. When nine years of age he came to America with his parents and settled near Mechanicsburg, O. He came to Illinois when he became a young man. Typical home-loving people, Mr. and Mrs. Boyle have always had a liking 'for children and to that union eight children were born. Besides caring for their own, they at one time also sheltered under their roof a sister of Mrs. Boyle and the sister's five children. At that time, they resided in Western avenue, Just beyond the city limits. Mr. and Mrs. Boyle say their home was jokingly referred to at "The Orphans' Home." Their eight children survive. They are Joseph T. Boyle and R. H. Boyle of Mattoon, John E. Boyle of Washington, D. C Jacob C. Boyle and Miss Maldle C. Boyle of Indianapolis, and Mrs. Lucie E. Brown, Miss Catherine C. Boyle and Miss Helen M. Boyle, all of Chicago. Mr. Boyle is the last of his family. Mrs. Boyle has two sisters, Mrs. Lucie IS. Boyle of Indianapolis and Mrs. Emma McDowell of Spokane, Wash., and a brother, Edgar Henkle, also of Spokane.
