When the Whitestone Point water pumping station on the shore of Lake Huron was opened, Saginaw rejoiced that it no longer had to rely on its 165 hand operated water pumps. In fact, a funeral was held for one of the water pumps, complete with pall bearers, baskets of flowers, parades, and ball games, on May 20, 1949, and the pump was interred in the yard of the city water works, plus a nickel-plated water pump was enshrined in an enclosed glass niche at the water works. The event was so special it was featured in LIFE Magazine (June 13, 1949, p.53), which said it was the happiest funeral ever held.
