Mrs. Myrtle Murphy Sims, was the fifth of seven daughters and two sons born to Clyde and Mack Murphy in Union County Eldorado, Arkansas on December 4th, 1927. She departed this life, drew her last breath and conceived her final thought on January 17th, 2016 9:40pm at the Valley View Senior Life Center and was immediately received with a burst of sunshine, angels, family, friends and joy as she greeted her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Myrtle came from a strong Christian family and at an early age united with Evergreen Baptist Church in Eldorado, where her mother and father served as a deaconess and deacon along with her sisters who were ushers and sang in the church choir.
It was in the church choir where Myrtle loved the singing of gospel music and developed a voice admired and appreciated by many. She married U.S. Army Sgt Morgan Sims in 1955 and moved to his new military assignment at Fort Riley, Kansas. After his tour overseas, Morgan and Myrtle moved to Junction City. Kansas and bought a home in Westwood. They both attended Second Missionary Baptist Church which Myrtle officially joined in 1958.
Over the years, Myrtle worked in numerous capacities in the church, becoming a leader of the Senior Matrons, serving on the Patrons Circle, the Beacon Light Union Missionary Department, choir director and lead singer, participating in the Junction City Community Singers, founding the first exercise program for SMBC, decorating the float for the church in their many parades in the city, a member of the NAACP, the Order of the Eastern Star and the Daughters of Isis who she loved for their involvement in the community.
She helped many people who were in need often doing things they could not do for themselves. Her hobbies were singing at which she excelled, sewing, where she was proficient , making robes and usher uniforms for the youth and jr. ushers and cooking. She thoroughly enjoyed hearing others compliment her about her pound cakes, hot water corn bread and famous corn bread dressing. She additionally helped care for many children in the city whose working parents sometimes were not able to both work and place their child or children in facilities that were above their means. Somehow they found Mrs. Myrtle Sims who willingly cared for them.
Above all else, Myrtle Sims loved her family, often travelling to visit her sisters, brothers, nieces and nephews. She leaves to mourn her loss, her only child and son Larry D. Hicks, her daughter in-law Kay Phillips- Hicks, grand-daughter Chastity Hicks, grandson Raphael Phillips and his wife Teresa, great grand children Kalen, Lauren and Logan along with a tremendous number of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She will be missed.
