Catherine was 18 when she immigrated with her mother, Jane Lowrie/Lowry and one brother, John Joseph Lees, from Scotland, where they were born. They went to Butte, Montana, in 1907, on the S. S. Sicilian and docked in Quebec, Montreal, Canada. Her father, John Lees, had come earlier to establish a job and home for his family.

Kate had two other siblings: Mary, who died at the age of seven, and a baby son in Scotland, named Matthew. They both died the same year in 1901.

While living in Butte, the young Catherine Lees met, James J. McLaughlin. Their wedding and arrangements were posted in the local newspaper as being an Irish wedding in June of 1911. Her cousin, Catherine Martin Ward, my grandmother, was her attendant. Although the Lees family was from Scotland, they were of Irish Catholic descent. (Family DNA is pointing to Ulster, Ireland: South Monaghan, Louth, and Monaghan.) The story goes that grandma's grandfather, John O'Neill, left Sligo, Ireland, and went to Scotland near the time of the Great Potato Famine, married Catherine Martin, and their first born was Matthew. He then changed his surname to Lees.

"Kate" died after childbirth from Uremic Poisoning, Kidney failure. She is buried next to her mother.

DEATH OF MRS. McLAUGHLIN
