Funeral services will be Friday (12-21-01 for Howard Leroy Charles, formerly of Sharon and Hubbard and currently a resident of Largo, Fla. He died at 10:30 p m Sunday (12-16-01 in Oak Manor Care Center, Largo. He was 79. Mr. Charles was born Nov 20 1922, in Sharon to Daniel and Etha Whorley Charles. The WWII veteran served in the US Army in the Curopean Theater of Operations in the 24th Special Service Unit as a sergeant at the Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns. He retired in 1980 after 32 years of service with Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. as an assembler of fan housings. Mr. Charles was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Hermitage and Free and Accepted Masons Jerusalem Lodge 19, Hartford. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason with the New Castle Consistory. His wife the former Doris M.Reiter, whom he married Jan 26, 1946 died Dec 31, 1999. Surviving are a daughter, Martha A Charles, Dunedin, Fla; a brother Robert Charles, Greenville; two sisters, Irene Wiesen, Sharon and Cecelia Hinkle, Tucson, Ariz and two grandchildren. Besides his wife he was preceded in death by his parents, a brother John, who died as an infant, and a sister Nina Bailey. {herald}
