Phillip Wayne Robbins, "Mr. Urbandale", 85, passed on Wednesday, January 19, 2016 at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.

Wayne was born and raised on the south side of Des Moines on Bell Avenue.

After serving in the Air National Guard, he took a job as a salesman for Wonder Bread, where he met his wife Joanne. After their marriage, Wayne and Joanne moved to Urbandale where they have lived for 61 years and raised their children.

Wayne was very active in the community of Urbandale.

Wayne was owner of Advertising Features Company for over 50 years.

He served as president of the Urbandale Chamber of Commerce, J-Hawk Booster Club, Urbandale Girls Recreation Association (UGRA) and most recently president of the Urbandale Historical Society for 14 years. Wayne became involved with the Historical Society in 1986 and was a motivating force in its restoration, serving as a go between with the City Council, architects and contractors and contributed hundreds of hours of labor in the restoration process. In 2015, the Urbandale Historical Society dedicated and named the barn the "Wayne Robbins Barn", which he was instrumental in the planning and construction of the barn and donated many farm tools and antiques for display.

Wayne loved volunteering in his community in all areas from coaching girl's recreation softball and basketball to building concessions stands at the high school softball and football fields. In 1988, Wayne received the Urbandale Citizen of the Year Award for his multiple years of volunteering in the community. In 1994, Gov. Terry Branstad inducted Wayne into the Iowa Volunteer Hall of Fame for all of his community work. Wayne had a long history of community service given freely to the community he loved.

Wayne was also a faithful servant at his church, Westminster Presbyterian, where he served on the deacon board and as an usher for several years. Wayne was loved by many friends and family.His beautiful smile and bigger than life personality will be missed by so many. We are thankful he accepted Jesus as his savior and is standing with him now. No matter how you knew Wayne, dad, brother, uncle, cousin, or friend, he will forever be in our hearts.

Wayne is survived by his wife Joanne, of 62 years, daughters Jeri (David) Pilmer, Linda (Jeff) Coop and grandchildren April and John Pilmer and Chelsea and Sarah Coop; brother Howard (Pat) Robbins, sister Myrna Smith; sister Jeannie (Jim) Suber and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents Floyd and Eva Robbins and brother's Dale and Harold Robbins.

The family of Wayne would like to thank the staff of the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown for the excellent care they gave Wayne during his time with them.

Visitation will be Sunday, January 24, 2016 from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. at Westover Funeral Home, 6337 Hickman, Des Moines. A celebration of his life will be Monday, January 25, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church at 4114 Allison Ave., Des Moines.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Urbandale Historical Society, 4010 70th St., Urbandale, Iowa 50322.
