Samuel married Mary Cushing on 10 July 1750, Marshfield, Ma. Mary was b 7 Mar 1729/30, Plympton, Mass, the d/o Ignatius Cushing & Ruth Croade. She d 16 Nov 1810, North Haven.

Samuel & Mary had 9 children.
1. Samuel Thomas, Jr: 28 Jul 1751, Marshfield - 14 Aug 1832, North Haven, Me
2. Stephen Thomas: 4 Oct 1753, Marshfield -
3. Mary Thomas: 4 Jan 1756, Marshfield - 1825, Vinalhaven, Me
4. Josiah Thomas: 19 Feb 1759, Marshfield - 12 Feb 1783, Marshfield
5. Lucy Thomas: abt 1761, Marshfield -
6. Ruth Thomas: 12 Aug 1762, Marshfield - 10 Sept 1848, Frankfort, Me
7. Lydia Thomas: 29 Dec 1764, Marshfield (10 Sept 1765 per Bible record) - 29 Apr 1849, North Haven (20 Apr 1849 per Bible record)
8. Rachel Thomas: about 1765, Marshfield - after 1833, North Haven
9. Cushing Thomas: 5 Nov 1786, Marshfield - 13 Sept 1844, Camden, Me.

Samuel's 1786 survey response of residing on the island for at least 20 years puts his arrival on North Haven before 1766. There was a large surge of individuals coming from Marshfield in about 1765. It appears that, like others, he went back & forth between North Haven & Marshfield, owning land between the Cubby Hole & Kent Cove. He did not bring up his frame home from Marshfield until late 1784, arriving in 1785.

"Samuel Thomas was born in Marshfield, Ma 1741 [1721] and came here at an early date. He purchased from one Rufus Candish a lot of land between Kent Cove and the Cubby Hole (so-called) where he settled. He bought this land from Rufus Candage. He was by trade a carpenter. Ref Vinalhaven History p 54. He was believed to be the first Thomas to remove to the Fox Islands. [Note: Samuel Thomas actually purchased some of the land by Kent Cove from Thomas Beverage in 1783. It is not known where he lived prior to moving to the Fox Island Thoroughfare. It could be that that earlier land was what he purchased from Rufus Candish.]

The Samuel Thomas House in Marshfield, Massachusetts, was taken down in October 1784. The timbers were shipped to North Haven where it was rebuilt. Samuel and his wife, Mary Cushing, and family moved into the house May 1785.

On 3 Nov 1784, Samuel Thomas, husbandman of North Fox Island, purchased 120 acres from Thomas Beverage for the sum of 150 pounds. This land was bordered on the north by the Cubby Hole, and went south, south-east as the shore lies. This land eventually returned into Kent and Beverage hands. The transaction was witnessed by Benjamin Kent and Penelope Winslow, and William Vinal, Justice of the Peace. It was signed 13 Apr 1785, and registered at Ellsworth Court House 27 Nov 1792. Hancock Co Deeds, Book 2 Page 60. This may very well be the original land owned by Thomas Beverage prior to the Revolutionary War. This deed also disputes the purchase of the land from Rufus Candage.

In the March 1786 survey of Vinalhaven residents made by Rufus Putnam, Samuel cited that he had been a resident of the islands for 20 years. Since 20 years appears to be the maximum allowed on the survey, and it is known that others had been residents for longer than that, Samuel arrived on the islands in 1766, if not before.

In 1790, Samuel resided on "Vinalhaven" (North Haven) where he is listed with 5 males over the age of 16 (himself, Samuel Jr, Cushing, possibly Stephen & ?), 1 male under 16 (?) and 3 females (wife Sarah, Rachel & ?) It would appear that he had residing with him another married couple with a child under 16. He is residing on the southern side, by Fox Island Thoroughfare
