Death of Col J. B. Zollicoffer.
Col J. B. Zollicoffer, whose extreme illness was announced last week, died at his residence near here, on Saturday morning last, of pneumonia, complicated with stomach troubles. He was buried at the family burying ground Sunday afternoon, the Rev. M. V. McDuffie conductiong the services. Col. Zollicoffer had lived a long and useful life, being in the sixty fifth year of age. He was universally popular as was evident from the large concourse of people, both white and colored, who attended his funeral. He was a man of large intellect and liberal views, firm in his opinions but charitable to all; always ready to condemn the wrong and pity the wrong doer.
He was preminent in the affairs oft he county and aided by his wisdom and judgement in the conduct of public matters. In 1878 he was a candidate for the State Senate and notwithstanding the overwhelming Republican majority in the county came within twenty-three votes of being elected.
A few years ago he joint the Baptist church at this place and lived a consistent member until death called him from his labors. To the deeply bereaved wife and sons the ROANOKE NEWS offers its sincere sympathies and is joined by the entire community which feels and regrets that a good man has fallen. Peace to his ashes

The adjacent Probate document lists Jerome's wife as Sally J. Zollicoffer who filed for custody of the estate consisting mostly of 465 acres of property.
This doc lists his death in Halifax County, NC and presumably the month prior to this probate document.

1879. Jerome's first wife is Mary Ann or Esther Hawkins. They married around 1842.
Also, I found obituary for Jerome which I posted on the memorial. His death date is
November 29, 1884.
