Elizabeth "Bessie" Sigler Bertsch was born in the Allegany mountains of Maryland in 1886. In 1900 she moved with her family to Anaconda, Montana. There she met and married Otto Bertsch. The couple had five children, one of who died at age two.
Bessie and Otto moved to Beaverton, Oregon in 1917, where they farmed and had two more children. They later moved into Portland, where they ran the Kennedy Grocery. Bessie also served hot lunches to children at the neighboring school.
Bessie died in 1958. Survivors included her children: Robert, Jacob, John, Ella, Katherine, and Dona. She was preceded in death by her husband, Otto, and daughter Bessie.
