It has been family tradition that Julia's mother, Olive, as one of the town's midwives, brought the diphtheria into her home after caring for others in the epidemic. To be fair to her -- and after much study of the progress & scope of the disease on the island -- the disease was rampant, especially in the Pulpit Harbor area & those connected to it, and it was not her fault. Olive lost another daughter to this disease Julia Waterman Beverage. One sister, Lenora Carver who married John W Beverage, and had a daughter Lizzie, all perished from the disease. Another sister, Orinda Carver who married Alvin G Beverage, also died of the disease. Her husband was also ill but recovered. One brother-in-law, Benjamin Crabtree Beverage, died from the disease. He resided on the eastern side of the island. Many North Haven families were hit, but the Pulpit Harbor area was hit the hardest.
