John W. Ashworth, Collierville TN
He was affectionately known as 'Daddy', 'Pawpaw' or 'Popa Bear' and was lovingly referred to as 'John Boy' by his wife of 29 years. He was always a man of great integrity and a treasured, trusted friend. John Wesley Ashworth Jr., 82, graced this earth from his birthplace of Memphis on June 25, 1933 until his death, December 12, 2015 in Collierville, the quaint, historic town he called home for 33 years. A highly respected homebuilder and real estate developer-investor, he graduated from Memphis State University (U of M) with a degree in Civil Engineering. A determined, hardworking man, he worked days and took night classes for 11 years before receiving his bachelor's degree. During that time, he was a draftsman for the City of Memphis; upon receiving his degree, he was promoted to Assistant City Engineer, a position he held for several years. John had a genuine love of history, which was a perfect fit in Collierville where he built and developed many subdivisions in the heart of the Town as Ashworth Construction and later with partners Doug Dickens and Hank Hill. He, with his wife, Patricia, owns vintage buildings on Center and Walnut Streets in the historic district, and a building on Mulberry Street that houses 'Patricia's Boutique'. Since the age of 19, he had a keen interest in collecting Confederate-Civil War weaponry and horse equipment. He and Patricia collected walnut and cherry southern country furniture. John was much sought after by authors for his expert knowledge of Civil War era military armaments and contributed to several publications and books. Confederate Shotguns and Southern Agent Marked Shotguns, a book he was co-authoring, is set for publication next year. A member of Germantown Baptist Church, as a boy, John was baptized at Central Avenue Baptist Church (now, Ridgeway Baptist) and worshipped at Forest Hill Baptist Church for many years. He is survived by daughters Bonnie Porbeck (Jack) of Jacksonville TX and Carol Ashworth of Nashville; sons, Wesley Ashworth of Collierville and David C. Ashworth of Memphis; one brother, Tom Ashworth of Cayce MS. As husband to wife Patricia Ashworth, he also cherished their blended family. Survivors also include sons, Jeff Pounds of New Orleans and David Collins of Henderson TN; and daughter, Lisa Pounds Byrnes (Wood) of Denver CO. He was grandfather to six: John W. Ashworth IV, Matthew Coggins and the Byrnes children, Margaret, and triplets Anna Frances, Cate Ashworth and Lily Wilkes. Visitation will be Saturday, December 19, 5-7pm at Collierville Funeral Home. Services will be at Germantown Baptist Church on Sunday, December 20 at 2pm. Memorials are requested to Baptist Reynolds Hospice House, 1520 West Poplar Avenue, Collierville TN 38017, where John received kind and gentle care during his last few days. Donations may also go to the non-profit of the donor's choice. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery, Collierville, Shelby County, TN, followed by a reception at Collierville Funeral Home, 534 West Poplar Avenue
