Antoinette Poulson Williams, 91, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother went to be with her Lord and Savior on January 18, 2016.
Born in the City of Suffolk, VA. July 28, 1924, a graduate of Suffolk High School, Class of 1942, she was the daughter of the late Jester William Poulson and Nettie Russell Poulson. She was preceded in death by the love of her life and loving husband of 64 years, Howard N. Williams, son, Craig N. Williams, son, Bruce J. Williams, grandson, Timothy C. Edwards, and son-in-law Prince A. Edwards, Jr.
Since 1943, she served as a devoted member of Main Street United Methodist Church. She was a faithful servant of God through her church, having served on the Administrative Board, Chair of the Christian Higher Education Campus Ministries, Chair of the Memorial Committee, President of the United Methodist Women, Chair of the School of Missions, Member of the Conference Evangelism Group, and served on a special committee in 1995, that published a book "The Life of Jesus as depicted in Our Stain Glass Windows".
She began her nursing career after raising her family, graduating from the Obici Practical School of Nursing in 1969 and received the Business & Professional Woman's Club Award for Outstanding Nursing Achievement. She was a dedicated nurse and served many patients at the Obici Hospital Emergency Room up until she was 80 years old, and was also a member of the Obici Hospital Auxiliary. She made an art form of assisting people in obtaining emergency care. After retiring, she continued to serve as a volunteer for the Auxiliary's gift shop.
Always passionate about community service and public affairs, she was an active member of the Suffolk Woman's Club for 64 years and President from 1988 through 1992, a longtime member of the Pilot Club of Suffolk, the Suffolk Chapter of AARP, Suffolk Art League, Sister Cities Commission, Suffolk Christian Woman's Club, and in 1989, served as a Senior Intern to Congressman Norman Sisisky representing the 4th Congressional District.
Survivors include her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, who she loved and nurtured, daughter, Joan Williams Edwards of Norfolk; son, Ronald H. Williams, Sr. and wife, Karen of Suffolk, grandchildren, Ronald H. Williams, Jr. and wife, Beth of Norfolk, David J. Williams and partner, Bernardo Coindreau of New York, NY, Amy Edwards Myers and husband, Patrick of Norfolk, Lisa Edwards-Soblotne and husband, Ray of Norfolk, Brittany Kania and husband, Adam of Smithfield; great grandchildren Corinne Smith, Miranda Smith, P.J. Myers, Taylor Myers, Ian Edwards, Maddie Edwards, Camden Edwards, Elizabeth Williams, and Anna Williams, all of Norfolk. She was a woman who loved her family, her church, her friends and her community.
The family would like to thank the entire staff of Kindred Nansemond Pointe for the wonderful and compassionate care provided to Antoinette over the last 3 years.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, January 21, 2016 at 1 PM in Main Street United Methodist Church by the Rev. Myrtle Frances Hatcher, Pastor, followed by a reception in the Atrium and burial in Holly Lawn Cemetery. R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, Suffolk is serving the family.
