Leonard W. Albitz, 82, of Gilbertsville, husband of Sylvia P. (Zartman) Albitz and the late Eleanor (Steltz) Albitz, passed away on Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at Sanatoga Center Nursing Home. Born in Pottstown, he was the son of the late Charles F. and Helen (Johnson) Albitz.


Leonard worked for Occidental Chemical and Firestone Tire & Rubber for many years. He was a US Army veteran who served during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Austria, and served in the Army National Guard out of Ft. Indiantown Gap. He was a member of Shepherd of the Hills UCC Church where he was a former usher and consistory member. Leonard was also a member of the Gilbertsville Fire Co., was the past secretary for the Sassamansville Boy Scout Troop #291 and was a past president and treasurer of the Mont-Berks CB Club. He enjoyed gardening and going to car shows, camping in his younger years and most important to him was the time he spent with his family.


Surviving with his wife is son Bruce D. Albitz, husband of Shari; daughter Betsy J. Bilski, wife of Eric; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; stepdaughter Susan Hughes, wife of Tom; stepsons Henry "Kip" Zartman Jr., husband of Sheri, and Scott Zartman Sr., husband of Mary; 11 step-grandchildren and 11 step great-grandchildren. Also surviving is his sister Mary Ann Samuels, wife of Ed. He is predeceased by his brothers Robert and Charles.


A funeral service will be Saturday, Aug. 1, 11 a.m. at Shepherd of the Hills UCC Church, 527 Hoffmansville Road, Bechtelsville, PA 19505. Burial will follow in St. Paul's Lutheran Church Cemetery, Sassamansville.
