Bernice Fawn Murphy, the daughter of Walter R. and Isa Blanche Loofbourrow Lathrop, was born March 10, 1913 in Smith Center, Kansas. She died suddenly on Wednesday, June 18, 2003 at her home in Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 90 years, 3 months and 9 days.
Bernice was raised in the Smith Center, Kansas area and graduated from high school there and attended Kansas State University. She received her Degree in Education from Northwest Missouri State University at Maryville, Missouri. Bernice was united in marriage to Frederick M. Murphy on May 4, 1940 at Esbon, Kansas. They lived in Smith Center, Kansas, where Bernice started to teach school. They later moved to Winner, South Dakota and in l960 moved to Red Oak, Iowa. Bernice taught many years in the Red Oak Community School System in the Elementary System. She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Red Oak, P.E.O. Chapter HB, Alpha Xi Delta Sorority, and Retired Teachers Association. Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Frederick on November 12, 1994, an infant brother and a sister, Alta Worley.
Bernice is survived by her children, Mike Murphy and wife Valerie of Evergreen, CO, James Murphy and wife Rhonda of Veradale, WA, and Jane Potter and husband Andy of Littleton, CO; 8 grandchildren, Sean Murphy and wife Angela, Aretus Murphy, Michael Murphy and wife Mika, Christine Paulson, Elizabeth Siebert, Andrew Potter, Rianna Arnold and Kelsie Arnold; 2 great-grandchildren, Brian and Brenna Murphy; a sister, Mrs. Mona Cooper of Topeka, Kansas, other relatives and a host of friends.
