Newport Hoosier State
Wednesday, May 10, 1882
At about 9 o'clock on last Saturday morning occurred the death of Uncle John Ford, of Helt Township. His disease was lung fever. Mr. Ford was born in Ohio in 1809, and emigrated to this county with his parents in 1818, when a mere boy. He lived upon the farm on which he died for over 50 years. When his parents came to Helt Township, this county had not been organized, and was one vast wilderness, Indians being quite numerous in the county at that time. His funeral, which took place on last Sunday, was very largely attended by relatives and friends, attesting the high esteem in which he was held by his neighbors. He had no enemies in this county. Everybody loved and respected Uncle John Ford. He was a generous a hearted man as ever lived, and was ever ready to help the distressed and unfortunate. His kindness and many noble deeds will live in the minds of the people for many years to come. He was a member of the M.E. Church, and tried to live an honorable and upright life.
