In his later years Lesley Nelson became what was then known as a"River Rat". That is he lived on a houseboat on the Ouachita River atMonroe, Louisiana and sold fish for a living. He was a frequent vistor to the homes of his siblings and his neices and nephews. Healways carried a long, very thin-bladed table knife with a bone handleto eat with when he was visiting. In practice he would flex the blade of the knife by depressing it on his plate, scoop it under the black-eyed peas or other food, and in a quick motion pass the knifebetween his lips, and all the food would disappear. He had a lot ofstories about life on the river. He said he feared only one thing onthe river: the alligator gar. He maintained the alligator would give aperson all the room he wanted if given the opportunity, and they never attacked.
