After a long & full life, our loving Mom, Dorothy Marie, completed her earthly journey on July 28 at the age of 93 & is once again with her welcoming circle of family & friends who have been watching over her from above.
Her journey began when she was the 4th of 5 children born to Coral Mae & Ernest Lafayette Horton in Merkel, TX. From there the family moved the short distance to Abilene where she enjoyed a happy childhood & was on the tennis team at Abilene High School. She copntinued her education at Texas State College for Women (now Texas Women's University) & then returned to Abilene to attend Hardin-Simmons University. In 1938 she interrupted her education to marry Cecil Chenoweth & then worked with him at Abilene Greenhouse & Florist. During WWII while Cecil was supporting America's war effort by working on the Canol Project, she enlisted in the Women's Auxillary Army Corps. When the war ended, they returned to Abilene. After several more moves they & their 2 young children settled in Dallas. When she & Cecil divorced while the children were still in elementary school, she willingly took on the role of sole parent & proved to be sucessful in this challenging enviornment. Once her children were grown, she began another chapter in her life when she married Oland Weathersbee & shared life with him in Humble, TX until his death 20 years later. In the Humble/Houston area, she saw an oppertunity for a future in real estate, so earned both a real estate license & a broker's license & was very sucessful in buying & renting homes. She enjoyed her business as well as her many friends & was active in Eastern Star, her church, AARP, oil painting & spent many hours playing bridge & visiting with her friends.
She was preceded in death by her beloved parents as well as her cherished sisters, Louise, Thelma, Orlene & brother, E.L. Jr. & by Cecil & Oland. Among those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Connie (husband Joe & his daughter, Stacy), son, Dale, as well as her stepsons, Walter & Lee & their families, plus numerous other relatives & many friends. We will miss her very much, but are grateful that she is now free from the mental fog of Alzheimer's & the restictions of a weakened body.
We would like to thank Fredericksburg Nursing & Rehab as well as Hill Country Memorial Hospice for their compassion, thoughtfulness & wonderful care.
At her request, a graveside service will be held at Elmwood Memorial Park in Abilene on Friday, July 30, at 11:30 AM.
