A younger son of John Drake (d. 1770) of St Luke's Parish, Southampton County, Virginia, by his second wife Winifred (d. 1800), who after her husband's death lived on her own farm on the Virginia-North Carolina border adjacent to the Fairclothe family. In 1807 Jordan and his elder brother Rev. Joel Drake sold their property in Northampton County, North Carolina and migrated northwest. They encountered a terrible tornado while crossing the Ohio River, before settling at Anderson's Fork in Clinton County, Ohio. In 1810 they settled on Olive Branch located north of Fort Ancient and south of Oregonia in Washington Township, Warren County, Ohio, and were members of the Methodist church founded there.

Jordan's paternal grandparents were Thomas Drake (d. 1753/58) of Southampton County, Virginia, and his wife Anne Griffin [Griffith], a daughter of Owen Griffin [Griffith] and Mary Hunt.

His great-grandfather John Drake was born 1647 in the parish of South Petherton, Somerset, England, and was transported with his parents, Richard and Thomasine Drake, from Bristol, Gloucestershire, in 1658 by the mariner Andrew Ball. John Drake married Jemima, a sister of Thomas Parnell, and patented land in Isle of Wight County, Virginia in 1682.

Jordan's 3rd-great-grandparents were John Drake (d. 1623) of London, and his wife Margery Allen Drake (d. 1614).

[Biography compiled by Jordan's 5th-great-grandson, Todd Whitesides.]
