Charles was the son of CS Campbell and Autie Prewitt Campbell. His middle name Lemuel was for his mother's father Lemuel A Prewitt. His father was born in New York City, and served in the Civil War as a private in the Michigan Infantry, Company E. Charles and his family lived in Louisiana and Texas until he moved to California as an adult. His father died on June 9, 1922 in Ft Worth, Texas where he is buried at Mt Olivet Cemetery. His mother Autie Prewitt Campbell was from Lauderdale, Mississippi. His parents married on February 13, 1872. His mother died in August 1877 in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Her place of burial is not found as of yet. Charles had one natural sibling Robert E Campbell who lived and died in Kirbyville, Texas March 3, 1947. Charles had four half siblings from his father's other marriages.
