James A. Parker can not be positively identified in either the 1850 or 1860 U.S. Censuses. He enlisted February 29, 1864 at 19 years of age, in Company F, 23rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, for a 3-year term of service. He died March 10, 1864 at the General Army Hospital at Gallipolis, Ohio in Gallia County. Rank: Private. His father applied for a pension, October 19, 1883, which was approved and issued as Certificate #222242.

James A. Parker's name appears as "J.A. Parker" on the monument of the 23rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, located at 6901 Woodland Ave., Cleveland, Ohio.

Additional information might be found in his compiled military service record, located at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. and in his separate pension file.

A headstone application indicates that the stone was ordered March 29, 1879. However there is a modern flat headstone inscribed with "John A. Parker" of the 23rd Regiment in Pine St. Cemetery's veterans' section but there was no such person by that name in the 23rd Ohio Regiment. It could be that the newer stone was incorrectly inscribed. See Memorial #54204330.
