Mildred Imogene "Jean" Canady Hess died December 20th 2015 in Camp Verde Arizona. She was 87 years old.

She was born outside Shaw, Mississippi on July 17th 1928. She was the daughter Of George Washington Canady and Audrey Lee Gibbs.

At the age of 7 years she started working as child labor in the cotton fields of the Mississippi Delta. She "chopped" and picked cotton during season from 1935 to 1946. She always said it was such backbreaking work.

In 1944, she was baptized into Church of Christ at Rosedale, Mississippi. In 1946 after graduating Valedictorian from Gunnison High School at Gunnison Mississippi the elders at Rosedale Church of Christ influenced her to continue her education at Freed-Hardeman Christian College in Henderson, Tennessee.

It was there that she met her husband of 61 years, Charles Albert Hess, who preceded her in death in 2011.

Shortly after they graduated from Freed-Hardeman in 1949, they were married at Helena, Arkansas. To them were born 7 children; Phil, Mike, Larry, Sam, Debbie, Paul, and David.

Mom lived in 12 states during her married life while Charles was preaching, teaching, and attaining his education. They were always very active in the Church of Christ, especially at Bostonia Church of Christ in El Cajon, California, where they were members for almost 40 years.

Mom loved the church. She also loved to travel, reading, writing, yard sales, any kind of TV game shows. And of course she loved her San Diego Padres! Mom was a strong Christian women, very loving to everyone around her and had a very strong spirit. She is survived by her 7 children, 11 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. We'll miss you mom!

Services will be held at the Verde Valley Church of Christ at 2001 Arena Del Loma, Camp Verde, Arizona on Jan 9th at 1pm.
